Qualifi Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

Am I eligible for this programme?

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

• Be aged 19 or above.
• There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements, although a Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training may be helpful.
• Entry is through a centre interview and learners are assessed on an individual basis.
• Applicants should be qualified and/or experienced in the subject they intend to teach. Those intending to teach academic subjects would usually be expected to hold a degree in their subject specialism, while those teaching professional or vocational subjects would usually be expected to hold a relevant professional or industry qualification and/or substantial sector experience.
• Applicants must demonstrate the potential to study at a minimum of academic Level 5.
• Applicants must have access to a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice, including work with groups, so that the required practical and observation evidence can be completed.
• There are no firm rules regarding prior Mathematics or English qualifications, but applicants are expected to have sufficient personal skills to complete the academic and professional requirements of the programme and to support their own learners appropriately.

The qualification contains four mandatory units and eight optional units. Learners must complete all four mandatory units to achieve 75 credits and select optional units worth at least 45 credits. A minimum of 61 credits must be achieved at Level 5, giving a total of 120 credits.

Core Units

1. Theories, Principles and Models in Education and Training

20 Credits | Level 5

This unit develops understanding of the theories, principles and models that underpin learning, communication, assessment, curriculum development and reflective practice. Learners analyse how these concepts can be applied to their own teaching, learning and assessment practice.

2. Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training

20 Credits | Level 4

This unit develops practical knowledge and skills in teaching, learning and assessment. Learners explore initial and diagnostic assessment, individual learning goals, inclusive lesson planning and delivery, assessment of learning, safe learning environments and reflective evaluation of their own practice.

3. Developing Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Education and Training

20 Credits | Level 5

This unit develops higher-level teaching, learning and assessment practice within a chosen area of specialism. Learners investigate and improve their own practice and must have access to at least 20 hours of teaching practice while completing the unit.

4. Professional Practice in Education and Training

15 Credits | Level 5

This unit explores professionalism and professional values in education and training. Learners consider policy, accountability to stakeholders and external bodies, organisational context, and how teachers can contribute to quality improvement and quality assurance within their organisation.

5. Action Research

15 Credits | Level 5

This unit develops the ability to carry out action research within an area of professional practice. Learners plan and conduct research, collect and analyse data, present findings and recommendations, and evaluate their own practice in relation to the research process.

6. Develop and Prepare Resources for Learning and Development

6 Credits | Level 4

This unit focuses on preparing resources to support learning and development. Learners may create new resources or adapt existing materials, environments and equipment to meet individual learner needs, and evaluate the effectiveness of different resources used in teaching.

7. Developing, Using and Organising Resources in a Specialist Area

15 Credits | Level 5

This unit develops the ability to create, use and organise inclusive resources within a specialist subject or vocational area. Learners also examine legal responsibilities relating to resources and evaluate their own practice in resource development, use and accessibility.

8. Equality and Diversity

6 Credits | Level 4

This unit develops understanding of how to promote equality and value diversity in education and training. Learners examine relevant legislation and organisational practice, work with others to support inclusion, and review how their own behaviour and practice can promote equality.

9. Inclusive Practice

15 Credits | Level 4

This unit develops knowledge and understanding of inclusive practice. Learners evaluate factors that influence learning, examine legislation and professional responsibilities, and consider how teaching approaches can be adapted to improve inclusion and meet diverse learner needs.

10. Internally Assure the Quality of Assessment

6 Credits | Level 4

This practical unit develops competence in the internal quality assurance of assessment. Learners plan monitoring activities, evaluate assessment quality and assessor competence, provide feedback, support standardisation and manage information and legal requirements associated with internal quality assurance.

11. Manage Learning and Development in Groups

6 Credits | Level 4

This unit develops the skills required to manage learning and development within groups. Learners explore group dynamics, motivation, behaviour management, learning strategies, risk management and ways of involving learners in their own learning and development.

12. Understanding the Principles and Practices of the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment

6 Credits | Level 4

This unit develops the knowledge and understanding that underpin internal quality assurance. Learners explore planning, sampling, standardisation, roles and responsibilities, information management, legal requirements, technology and continuous improvement within assessment quality assurance.

Written Assignments

Assessment is vocational and is designed around realistic work-related tasks. Assignments contain questions linked to the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of each unit and require learners to engage with relevant theory, apply it to practice and, where appropriate, draw on real organisations and their own professional experience.

A portfolio of evidence is identified as an appropriate method of assessment for the qualification. Depending on the units selected, evidence may include:

• Written assignments and responses to assessment questions
• Portfolio evidence
• Oral and written questioning
• Teaching and training practice evidence
• Observed teaching practice
• Reflective accounts and professional development evidence
• Research and investigation activities
• Practical evidence for specialist optional units where required

The specification does not state one fixed number of written assignments for every learner because the final assessment pattern depends on the optional units selected and the evidence requirements attached to those units.

Teaching practice is a mandatory part of the qualification. Learners must complete a minimum of 100 hours of teaching or training practice. There must also be at least eight assessed observations of teaching practice, totalling a minimum of eight hours. The majority of teaching practice must involve groups of five or more learners.

The qualification is graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Learners must successfully complete all required units and meet the relevant assessment requirements to achieve the Diploma.

University Progression

Successful completion of the Qualifi Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training provides progression to:

• A Qualifi Level 6 qualification
• University to complete an undergraduate degree
• Employment in an associated profession

The qualification therefore provides a progression route for learners who wish to continue into higher-level education or advance their professional teaching and training career. Admission to a particular university or degree programme remains subject to the entry and admissions requirements of the receiving institution.
