About This Course

The Qualifi Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is a practical qualification designed for individuals who are responsible for maintaining and improving the quality of assessment within an organisation or assessment centre.

The programme develops both the theoretical understanding and practical competence required to internally assure assessment. Learners explore internal quality assurance principles, planning and sampling, assessor monitoring, standardisation, feedback, legal and regulatory requirements, information management and continuous improvement.

The qualification is regulated on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and has Qualification Accreditation Number 603/5651/0. It consists of two mandatory Level 4 units, carrying a total of 12 credits, with 120 hours Total Qualification Time and 90 Guided Learning Hours.

Am I eligible for this programme?

The qualification is designed for learners aged 19 and above.

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements. However:

  • Learners may find it helpful to have previously achieved a Level 3 qualification.
  • Approved centres are responsible for ensuring that the qualification is appropriate for the learner’s age and ability.
  • Applicants with considerable relevant experience but no formal qualifications may also be considered following an interview, provided they can demonstrate their ability to meet the demands of the programme.

As this is a practical internal quality assurance qualification, learners must also have access to an appropriate workplace or training environment in which they can undertake genuine internal quality assurance activities. Simulation is not permitted for the occupational competence element of the qualification.

Each unit is worth 6 credits, providing a total qualification value of 12 credits.

Core Units

1. Understanding the Principles and Practices of Internally Assuring the Quality of Assessment

6 Credits

This unit develops the knowledge and understanding required to support effective internal quality assurance. Learners explore quality assurance principles, planning and sampling strategies, the roles of assessors and quality assurers, standardisation, feedback, legal requirements, information management and the use of technology within quality assurance.

2. Internally Assure the Quality of Assessment

6 Credits

This practical unit develops learners’ ability to plan and conduct internal quality assurance activities within a workplace or training environment. Learners monitor assessors, review assessment decisions, evaluate assessment processes, provide feedback, support standardisation and maintain appropriate quality assurance records and procedures.

The complete qualification carries 12 credits, with 120 hours Total Qualification Time and 90 Guided Learning Hours.

Written Assignments

Assessment combines written knowledge assessment with practical workplace-based evidence.

For the unit Understanding the Principles and Practices of Internally Assuring the Quality of Assessment, knowledge outcomes are assessed through:

  • Assignments
  • Oral questions
  • Written questions

These assessments are internally set and marked, internally verified and externally quality assured by Qualifi.

For the practical unit Internally Assure the Quality of Assessment, learners must demonstrate competence within a genuine workplace or training environment. Simulation is not permitted.

Assessment methods must include:

  • Observation of performance
  • Examination of products of work
  • Questioning

The trainee Internal Quality Assurer must be observed monitoring a minimum of two assessors:

  • One assessor who is new to verification
  • One assessor who is experienced in verification

There must also be evidence of the learner monitoring at least two assessors, each working with a minimum of two learners through components of a qualification.

Evidence may include:

  • Internal verification records
  • Assessment documentation
  • Evidence portfolios
  • Staff continuing professional development records
  • Assessment papers
  • Observation records
  • Questioning of learners and assessors
  • Centre tracking records
  • Awarding organisation documentation

The knowledge elements of the practical unit are also assessed through assignments and oral or written questions.

Because assessment combines written assignments, questioning, observations and workplace evidence, the specification does not support stating one fixed number of written assignments for the entire qualification.

The qualification is graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Learners must successfully complete all required units and assessment criteria to achieve the Award.

University Progression

Learners who successfully complete the Qualifi Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice can progress to:

  • A Qualifi Level 4 qualification
  • A Qualifi Level 5 qualification
  • Employment in an associated profession

The specification does not state direct progression to a university degree programme. Therefore, no guaranteed university entry or direct degree progression should be claimed for this qualification.
