Course Overview
The Qualifi Level 3 Award in Education and Training provides an introduction to teaching and training and is designed for individuals who are new to teaching, currently working as assessors, or already involved in teaching and training.
The qualification develops the knowledge and skills required for preparing, planning and delivering learning. Depending on the optional units selected, learners may undertake microteaching with peers or teaching practice within a work or training environment. This makes the qualification accessible both to aspiring teachers and to individuals who are already working within education or training.
Eligibility
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Be aged 19 or above.
- There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification.
- Entry is through a centre interview, with learners assessed on an individual basis.
- The centre must determine that the qualification is appropriate for the learner’s age and ability.
- Learners are required to undertake an initial assessment of their Mathematics, English and ICT skills.
- Any identified development needs should be recorded and, where appropriate, supported through an agreed action plan.
There are no other nationally agreed entry requirements for the qualification.

Module Listing
The qualification contains six available units. Learners do not need to complete all six units.
To achieve the qualification, learners must complete:
- The mandatory unit, worth 3 credits
- A minimum of 6 credits from Optional Units Group A
- A minimum of 3 credits from Optional Units Group B
This provides the required total of 12 credits.
Mandatory Unit
1. Understanding Roles, Responsibilities and Relationships in Education and Training
3 Credits
This unit introduces learners to the role and responsibilities of a teacher within education and training. Learners explore professional responsibilities, boundaries, relationships with learners and other professionals, and the requirements that influence effective teaching practice.
Optional Units Group A
Learners must achieve a minimum of 6 credits from this group.
2. Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches in Education and Training
6 Credits
This unit develops learners’ understanding of inclusive approaches to teaching and learning and how these can be used to meet individual learner needs. Learners consider different teaching methods, learning environments, resources and approaches to creating an inclusive learning experience.
3. Facilitate Learning and Development for Individuals
6 Credits
This unit focuses on supporting individual learners through approaches such as coaching and mentoring. Learners explore different methods for facilitating one-to-one learning and development and consider how individual progress and learning needs can be supported effectively.
4. Facilitate Learning and Development in Groups
6 Credits
This unit develops learners’ understanding of group learning, group dynamics and the facilitation of learning and development within groups. Learners consider appropriate methods for supporting participation, reflection, collaborative learning and the different needs of individuals within a group setting.
Optional Units Group B
Learners must achieve a minimum of 3 credits from this group.
5. Understanding Assessment in Education and Training
3 Credits
This unit introduces learners to the different types and methods of assessment used in education and training. Learners explore the purposes of assessment, appropriate assessment methods, adapting assessment to individual needs, feedback and the importance of maintaining assessment records.
6. Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
3 Credits
This unit develops learners’ knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices that underpin assessment. Learners explore the role of the assessor, different assessment methods and the key requirements involved in planning, conducting and maintaining effective assessment practice.
Written Assignments
Assessment is designed around realistic, work-related tasks wherever possible. Learners are expected to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of relevant theories and apply this understanding to practical education and training contexts.
Assignments contain assessment tasks linked to the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the relevant units. Learners may be required to use examples from real organisations, their own work experience, case studies or other appropriate educational and training contexts.
The specification identifies a portfolio of evidence as an appropriate method of assessment for the qualification.
The exact number and form of assessments will depend on the optional units selected. Assessment may include:
- Written assignments
- Written or oral questions
- Portfolio evidence
- Practical teaching or facilitation evidence
- Observation of teaching practice where required by the selected unit
Where the learner selects Understanding and Using Inclusive Teaching and Learning Approaches in Education and Training, there is a microteaching requirement. Learners must participate in at least one hour of microteaching activity and personally deliver at least one 15-minute session that is observed and assessed. Learners who are already teaching may be able to use their normal teaching practice instead.
Some other optional units, including those concerned with facilitating learning and development, may require observed and assessed practice in a real work environment.
Because learners select different optional units, the specification does not support stating one fixed number of written assignments for every learner. The assessment requirements depend on the particular unit combination selected.
University Progression
Learners who successfully complete the Qualifi Level 3 Award in Education and Training can progress to:
- A Qualifi Level 4 qualification
- The Qualifi Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training
- Employment within an associated profession
The qualification therefore provides a progression route for learners who wish to continue developing their knowledge and professional practice within education and training.
